CITIZENSHIP COULD SOON BECOME MORE EXPENSIVE

The Trump administration is preparing a proposal that would increase the cost of the citizenship application process by 83%. Prices will go up from $640 to $1,170 once the proposal is passed. Other immigration fees are also going to increase to more than double the current fee.

The fees associated with obtaining permanent residence will go up 79% percent, from $1,220 to $2,195. So, becoming a US citizen is going to become a lot more expensive, and all permanent residents who are legally allowed to apply for citizenship status are urged to apply as soon as possible.

The legal practice of Manuel Solis believes that this is an attack on those who are most vulnerable, as it "discourages immigrants who have the right to obtain a place in our communities as equals", said Mr. Solis.

The proposed rule also outlines a series of other fee increases that impact on immigration-related applications for asylum-seekers, Temporary Protected Status beneficiaries, DACA recipients and legal permanent residents.

DACA renewals will increase from $495 to $765, and will possibly give Trump officials a tool to restrict the program, if the Supreme Court allows the program to continue, despite the administration's efforts to end it.
